KUCHING: The air pollutant index (API) reading in most of the major cities in Sarawak is still below 100, except for Sri Aman and Miri, state Assistant Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Minister Len Talif Salleh said.
He said although the API in some of the cities in Sarawak had previously increased to 150, the situation has improved.
According to him, the haze in Sri Aman was bad due to a forest fire in Kalimantan. The town is near the Indonesia-Malaysia border.
Speaking to reporters after the launching of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFP) Sarawak 2019 today, Len Talif said the haze in Miri was due to local forest fires.
He said these fires were being put out.
“We hope there will be rain in the next few days to further reduce the haze in the state,” he said.
As of 5pm today, the API reading was recorded as 254 in Sri Aman, 270 at SK Kuala Baram, Miri, and 364 at the industrial training institute in Miri.
An API reading of under 50 means the air quality is good, 51-100 is moderate, 101-200 unhealthy, 201-300 very unhealthy and above 300 hazardous. - FMT
