Economic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali has explained that he did not intend to hurt anyone by backing the proposal for Dr Mahathir Mohamad to serve as prime minister until the end of his term.
The PKR deputy president said he supported the opposition's call on this matter to ensure “stability and consistency” in the country.
"Eighty percent of my speech (earlier) is on the economy, political stability, investment, employment opportunities and industry development.
"This is why it is important for the PM to continue his term, for the sake of stability and consistency, until we decide in the next election.
"I did not mean to hurt any individual with this statement,” he told reporters in Penang this afternoon.
On the same note, Azmin said Malaysians have grown fatigued with the politicking.
"It is only been a year since we were given the mandate to govern on May 9 (2018) and we are already talking too much politics, it is not healthy,” he added.
Quizzed on the meeting between Mahathir and the opposition in Putrajaya on Tuesday night, Azmin claimed to be in the dark.
The minister said his regular sessions with the premier was mostly focussed on the economy and ministerial matters.
"I'm too occupied to talk about party matters," he added.
To another question on whether his backing for Mahathir meant that he does not support PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, he replied: "Don't interpret wrongly (jangan salah tafsir).”
Yesterday, the Star reported that a senior cabinet minister was invited to join the meeting between Mahathir and opposition leaders from Umno, PAS and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).
The prime minister, however, was tight-lipped when asked if Azmin was present.
Speculation has been rife that Mahathir prefers Azmin to succeed him despite an earlier agreement that he would pass the baton to Anwar in “two or three years.”
The sex video scandal implicating Azmin was also speculated to be related to this tussle. - Mkini
