GEORGE TOWN: The wife of the man who runs a popular Indian restaurant chain in Penang died on the spot this morning when their car crashed into a tree on the North-South Expressway.
Harikrishnan N Veerasamy, 51, the owner of the Sri Ananda Bahwan Restaurant chain, lost his wife Puvaneswary Kannan, 47, in the incident.
According to police, Harikrishnan lost control of the Range Rover Autobiography SUV and crashed into a tree at KM200.9 (northbound), just a few kilometres away from the Taiping exit.
Kerian district police chief Omar Bakhtiar Yaacob said Harikrishnan sustained injuries to his face and broke a finger on his right hand, while his two sons aged 17 and 21 escaped with light injuries.
“The three survivors were rushed to the Taiping hospital for treatment while Puvaneswary was sent to the Parit Buntar Hospital for a post-mortem,” Omar said when contacted.
He said Puvaneswary’s post-mortem revealed she had died due to severe head injury.
Omar said the accident is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
It is learnt that Harikrishnan is currently warded in a private hospital in Penang. All of his restaurants have been closed in mourning following the death of his wife.
