Chong calls for action on dengue, clogged drains

Chong Chieng Jen is MP for Stampin, Kuching.
KUCHING: The state Housing Development Corporation has been urged to take immediate action on complaints of clogged drains in Taman Sri Cahaya Tondong, Batu Kawah, in view of the dengue menace.
Chong Chieng Jen said the clogged drains in the area were responsible for two dengue cases this year.
“After these cases were reported (recently) then only the local council did the fogging… hence the residents there had made many complaints regarding the condition of their housing area to HDC, mainly on clogged and dirty drains,” he said after a gotong royong clean-up at Taman Sri Cahaya Tondong here.
Batu Kawah is part of Stampin constituency, for which Chong is the MP.
He said due to the clogged drains, one case of dengue was reported in the housing area in June and the second case one month later.
Chong said HDC had not taken action so far to clear the clogged drains and the residents had to organise the gotong-royong to clear the clogged drains themselves today.
“Also the residents here have long suffered from foul smells due to a broken septic tank for 12 years. Only after the Federal government was changed in 2018 and after giving some pressure, then finally HDC took action to repair the septic tank in the middle of the housing estate,” he said.
Taman Sri Cahaya Tondong Neighbourhood Watch Committee chairman, Chai Jun Chen said the residents moved to the low cost housing area under HDC, comprising 11 blocks with 660 housing units in 2002. - FMT
