KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is currently replacing lifts older than 10 years at people’s housing projects (PPR), said Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil.
He said this follows the incident where a lift suddenly plunged five floors down at the Kampung Kerinchi PPR in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 2, injuring eight people.
This incident is believed to be due to negligence on the part of those responsible for the lift’s maintenance.
“I was informed by Kuala Lumpur mayor Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan that there are lifts older than 10 years still in service.
“He will inform me which lifts need to be replaced.
“At the very least, the Kg Kerinchi PPR will be given priority,” he told reporters when met at the Kg Kerinchi PPR for AidilAdha celebrations.
Fahmi said there were 500 lifts at the various people’s housing projects in the city. Each lift unit will cost RM100,000 to RM200,000 to replace, he added.
“Replacing all the lift units will involve a huge amount of money. We will replace the faulty ones first.”
Fahmi criticised residents who failed to take care of the lifts, with some using the passenger lifts to load their motorcycles and bicycles.
He said carrying heavy objects cause these lifts to become faulty early.
On the issue of transition of power to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, as again urged by the Otai Reformis group last week, Fahmi said he believed the leadership in Putrajaya had taken note of the matter.
“I believe that they are in the middle of solving this matter.
“For now, we should focus on solving problems faced by the people — the housing issue, cost of living, jobs and the economy,” the PKR communications chief said.
On Aug 2, the reformist group said Mahathir should announce whether the transition in power will take place in January or May next year.
Last week, a group of NGOs, including Bersih 2.0, the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (Abim) and Gabungan Bertindak Malaysia, had also urged Mahathir to set a clear transition plan for Anwar to take over by May 2021. - FMT
