PETALING JAYA: DAP’s Wong Tack today poured scorn on Lynas Malaysia Sdn Bhd’s suggestion to manage its waste in disused mines, saying such a move would destroy the land instead of rehabilitating it.
Yesterday, Lynas’ managing director Mashal Ahmad and general manager for radiation safety, regulations and compliance Ismail Bahari said they were looking at various options to store the water leach purification (WLP) residue, including utilising disused mines in the state.
Permanent disposal facilities (PDF), they said, can be designed to assist in the rehabilitation of disused mines in Pahang and provide “environmental benefits in a sustainable way” if PDFs are Putrajaya’s preferred choice when it comes to waste management.
Wong Tack, however, dismissed the rare earths company’s claim as audacious.
“Dumping radioactive waste in abandoned mines is akin to killing a rape victim.

“Instead of healing the piece of land, we are destroying it forever,” the Bentong MP, who has been a vocal critic of the project, said in a statement.
Wong Tack appealed to the government to stop “endorsing wrongdoings”, adding that it had a duty and responsibility to the people.
It is time, he said, to fulfill promises made by the ruling coalition to protect the wellbeing of the people and the environment.
“Stop the generation of more radioactive waste on our land, suspend Lynas’s licence immediately and then deal with the waste,” he said. - FMT
