Ex-Tamil Nesan staff seek minister’s help on salary arrears

Tamil Nesan, the oldest Tamil language newspaper in Southeast Asia, closed down on Feb 1 after being published for 96 years.
KUALA LUMPUR: After eight months’ wait for their salary arrears and compensation, about 40 workers of the defunct Tamil Nesan today urged Human Resources Minister M Kula Segaran to help them.
The paper’s former editor, K Padmanabhan, said he hoped Kula would look into their plight.
“We should have got our dues with interest as promised in a letter dated Jan 28, 2019.
“We share the joy of the 800 workers of Utusan Melayu who received the attention of the public and government and opposition leaders.
“We are also hoping that our own crisis will be resolved quickly with the intervention of the minister,” he said after leading a protest by former workers, some of whom had served the company for 30 to 40 years, outside the office of their former employer, S Vell Paari, at Damansara Heights here today.
Padmanabhan said the arrears, including Employees Provident Fund contributions and retrenchment benefits, amounted to nearly RM1.4 million.
