GEORGE TOWN: Friday night’s freak storm caused delays to 21 flights and the cancellation of two flights besides damage to the terminal roofing at the Penang International Airport (PIA).
In a statement, Malaysia Airports said the flight delays and cancellations at PIA affected more than 1,000 travellers that night.
Those affected were given overnight stay at a hotel.
“The airport has cleaned up and carried out repair works after the storm hit the island on Friday night.
“Despite the damages to the airport, we are glad that no passengers were injured in the ordeal.
“Some of the damages that occurred included a partially-torn roof and ceiling and broken glass doors and signage. A car was also reportedly damaged,” it said in a statement today.
It said a thorough clean-up of the terminal and the runway was carried out immediately to clear debris.
On Friday, a downpour coupled with strong winds close to 50kph battered most parts of Perlis, Kedah and Penang, uprooting many trees and causing damage to property.
PIA’s departure terminal roof, close to Gate B7, was sheared off by strong winds. The incident was caught on video by a worker from the control tower.
One of the terminal’s automatic glass doors was also shattered.
In JITRA, Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir said the storm damaged 1,358 houses in Kedah, Bernama reported.
He said Kuala Muda district was most affected with 400 houses damaged, followed by Kota Setar with 200 houses.
He said a cash aid of RM300 had already been disbursed to the affected residents.
Mukhriz said the replacement of zinc sheets and decaying wooden frames would incur high expenses.
Thirty-nine individuals received treatment at government hospitals in the state for various injuries in the storm. A 27-year-old female motorcyclist was killed in Kubang Pasu during the storm. - FMT
