Funding for women's sports to see 'exponential' rise next year

Women's sports programmes are set to see a marked increase in funding next year as part of the Youth and Sports Ministry’s 'Women 2020' initiative, minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said today.
"We are going on a very ambitious plan to ensure that we increase, to an exponential extent, sports funding for women's football, futsal, netball, rugby and many others.
"We will work very closely with the Education Ministry to ensure that sports education in schools, particularly, will also largely help women to a great extent (so that) they play a lot more (sports).
"In the end, we can come up with more women athletes in the whole sports ecosystem," he told the press after officiating the Malaysian Youth Council (MYC) annual conference in Cheras.

Syed Saddiq referenced the United States' Title IX, an act which outlaws discrimination on the basis of gender in federally-funded education programmes.
"Title IX ensures that sports funding is distributed equitably,” he said.
The Women 2020 initiative will also include funding for other programmes with the aim of developing more female NGO leaders, he added.
During his speech, Syed Saddiq lamented the low number of women among MYC leaders and representatives.
"I rarely see young women (represented), I know today we have three women here.
"There is a lot more we can do to improve this and allow more young women’s voices to be heard.
"If we put in terms (for women representation), we will be able to ensure sufficient women representation in youth organisations, from the grassroots to its highest levels," he said.  - Mkini
