GEORGE TOWN: PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says he has neither expressed support nor opposition to the Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project.
“I have to negotiate with the state government.
“I cannot go there and say clearly I oppose the PSR. I never said I supported it either.
“My duty is to listen to the fishermen, the environmentalists, and then I negotiate with the state government, ” said Anwar.
According to him, the Penang Chief Minister had said he was willing to opt for an alternative to secure funds for the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP).
Anwar also said Balik Pulau MP Muhammad Bakthiar Wan Chik had pledged support the state, but not the PSR project.
“They will offer alternatives, ” he said during the memorial for the late Consumer Association of Penang (CAP) president SM Mohamed Idris at the Wawasan Open University on Saturday (Aug 3).
On a separate matter, Anwar said he would abide by Pakatan Harapn’s decision on whether Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad should stay on for the full term as the Prime Minister.
He said this when asked about PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali’s statement expressing support for Dr Mahathir serving out a full term.
“It is his (Azmin’s) personal view. I will follow (the decision of) Pakatan Harapan, ” Anwar said.
It was reported earlier in the week that Opposition representatives met with Dr Mahathir on Tuesday (July 30) to advise against a transition of power to Anwar, as they felt that nobody should take over the country’s helm mid-way through.
