SELAYANG: A 46-year-old man claimed trial at a Sessions Court here to a charge of molesting a nine-year-old girl at a convenience store near Rawang last month.
The Indonesian, who goes by the single name of Aris, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him before judge Syafeera Mohd Said here on Friday (Aug 2).
According to the charge sheet, the construction worker is accused of molesting the girl by groping her from behind at a convenience store in Bandar Country Homes, Rawang.
The offence was allegedly committed at 6.19pm on July 10.
Aris was charged under Section 14(1) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and whipping upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor M. Arunjothy said the prosecution was not offering bail as the accused was a foreigner, and the court did not offer bail before fixing Sept 4 for mention.
The accused was unrepresented.
Last month, CCTV footage of the incident went viral on social media. In the video, a man can be seen hugging the child from behind before running away.
The girl's father lodged a police report after finding out about the incident from his wife at 8pm on the same day.- Star
