PETALING JAYA: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department P Waytha Moorthy today urged the Malaysian Indian community to remain calm in the wake of remarks by controversial preacher Dr Zakir Naik on their loyalty to the prime minister.
Waytha, who is in charge of national unity, also urged them to have confidence in the police probe into whether Naik had broken any of the country’s laws.
He said there had been much “emotion and convoluted feelings” of late among the non-Muslim community over Naik’s speeches on the beliefs of others.
This includes his claim that Malaysian Hindus are more loyal to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi than to Dr Mahathir Mohamad despite receiving “100 times” more rights than Muslims in India.
The remarks were made in a lecture Naik gave in Kelantan, which he has since claimed were taken out of context.
Waytha said it was only natural for the Malaysian Indian community to be upset over the belittling of their religion and the questioning of their patriotism.
He also said he understood that many NGOs and members of the public had lodged police reports against Naik.
“I urge the Malaysian Indian community to remain calm and have confidence that the police force will conduct their investigation in a fair and just manner, as an independent arm of our democratic process, to ascertain whether the freedom given to Zakir Naik has transgressed the laws of the country,” he said in a statement. - FMT
