The police have disallowed the rally against Zakir Naik’s insults to Malaysians planned Saturday by Indian groups.
Although this is against the democratic practice of New Malaysia for peaceful assembly, I accept the decision as there is a clear state of heightened racial and religious unrest recently.
I also hope that the police would act the same way in preventing and disallowing the Ummah Perpaduan rally on August 30, planned by Umno-PAS alliance.
PAS president Hadi Awang recently mentioned that Islamic brotherhood was more important than citizenry, while Nik Abduh called those who were against Zakir Naik as musoh Islam or enemies of Islam.
To me, the Ummah Perpaduan rally is more dangerous than the Saturday rally by the Indian groups.
In this month’s spirit of Merdeka, both rallies must be stopped. The police must not practice double standard in favor of one race over the other.
