Melaka NGO to hold gathering of PTAs to highlight ‘topsy-turvy’ education policies

MELAKA: A non-governmental organisation here is organising a gathering of parent-teacher associations (PTAs) to send a strong message to Education Minister Dr Mazlee Malik (pic) to “strengthen national unity among students”.
Melaka Consumer and Environment Association's (PPASM) Education and Woman bureau chief Azizah Harun said the decision to gather some 300 PTA representatives was made following mounting dissatisfaction among parents and teachers over apparent “topsy-turvy” policies by the Education Ministry.
“People at the grassroots are very unhappy with current developments.
“This sentiment is not only confined to vernacular schools but also parents and teachers from national schools here, ” she said in an interview after meeting with a group of parents at Ayer Keroh here on Tuesday (Aug 6).

Azizah, who is a former teacher, said that school administrators were also feeling the pressure of abrupt changes in education policies.
“The Education Ministry should do a study on why many teachers are contemplating opting for early retirements lately.
“This trend is not only in Melaka but all over the country, ” she said.
Azizah claimed that many teachers are also unhappy that Mazlee has allegedly failed to introduce programmes to create harmonious and cordial relations among students of various races.
“Education is not a platform to spread political ideologies or hatred, ” she said.
Azizah added that PPASM will be sending out letters and calling up PTAs to attend the gathering.
“We hope to gather by this weekend and the feedback would be made public, ” she said.
Azizah added that her association is also willing to work with organisations across the country to help promote a conducive learning environment in schools. - Star
