'Motorcycle ride-sharing will be studied if Saddiq convinces cabinet'

The Transport Ministry will look into the possibility of introducing motorcycle ridesharing if Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman is able to convince the cabinet to agree to the proposal.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said this when asked about the meeting between Putrajaya and Nadiem Makarim, the founder of Indonesian ridesharing company Gojek.
"There was a meeting held between the prime minister (Dr Mahathir Mohamad), Syed Saddiq, the Gojek founder and myself yesterday.
"There was a proposal from Gojek to start its operations and invest here. We heard Makarim's presentation. It was an interesting one," he said during a press conference at the KL Monorail Station today.

"In principle, I did not reject the proposal. I had previously said that the Transport Ministry was not ready to introduce motorcycle ridesharing.
"However, as a dynamic government, we do not want to shoot down any possibility before we study further," he added.
According to Loke, Syed Saddiq will be bringing up the matter in cabinet from the perspective of youth employment.
Loke, however, said his ministry would look at the matter from the aspects of public transportation and safety.
"The cabinet will deliberate and discuss that. I cannot preempt any decision by the cabinet.
"If the cabinet agree that the transport ministy take over in terms of studying the proposal, then we will work out the operational mechanism and framework," he said.
"At this point of time, it is still at the conceptional level," he said.
Other players can take part in motorcycle ride-sharing if the government allows Gojek to operate, according to Loke.
Previous administration allowed e-hailing, but banned the used of motorcycles.
Loke has reportedly expressed reservations about the safety of motorcycle ridesharing in the country, given the number of accidents involving motorcyclists.
Meanwhile, Loke jested at a group of MCA members who came to his ministry to present him an award in relation to the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS).
The prize, dubbed "Look, Look... Loke. Only Look" Award to symbolise the six-months suspension of the RTS until Sept 30, was given to a communication officer in the ministry.
Any effort by Malaysians, including MCA, to visit the ministry to present a memorandum, suggestion or complaints is welcomed, he said.
He, however preferred a trophy, instead of a prize made of cardboard.
"I thought they would give me a trophy yesterday, but they, very cheapskate, just gave me a cardboard," he said.
"So, next time, if they want to give me a prize, please make it a trophy," he said. - Mkini
