The criminal trial of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak involving the alleged abuse of power and money laundering of 1MDB funds begins today at the High Court in Kuala Lumpur.
Malaysiakini brings you live reports of the proceedings.
Former federal court judge and lead DPP Gopal Sri Ram is expected to read out his opening statement on the first day of Najib Abdul Razak's trial today for over 25 counts of power abuse and money laundering of RM2.28 billion of 1MDB's funds.
As the prosecution closed its case in the former prime minister's RM42 million SRC International trial yesterday, the way has been paved for the long-awaited trial to begin before Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah (below) at 9.30am this morning.
After the opening statement, the prosecution is expected to call at least two out of six formal witnesses to testify today, where a number of them have testified in the recent SRC International trial.
Recurring witnesses are due to the involvement of a similar monetary trail in both the 1MDB and SRC International cases, with the involvement of the same commercial bank, namely AmBank, where Najib had his personal accounts that are allegedly linked to the RM2.28 billion.
The 1MDB matter involved the largest set of charges against Najib, who was also previously the finance minister, where the 25 counts are linked to the 1MDB scandal, especially on the issue of the RM2.6 billion donation he purportedly received.
Out of the 25 charges, four are for abuse of his position to obtain RM2.28 billion from 1MDB.
The remaining 21 charges are for money laundering via receiving, spending and returning the RM2.08 billion donation (as it was valued at the time) from Tanore Finance Corporation.
