Opposition leader claims massive illegal logging taking place in Sapulut

Sabah opposition leader Jeffrey Kitingan claims these lorries are part of a massive illegal logging activity in Sapulut.
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah opposition leader Jeffrey Kitingan has called on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to probe “massive illegal logging activity” at a forest reserve in Sabah’s interior.
Jeffrey, who is Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) president, said the MACC should launch an immediate investigation into the alleged activities at Sapulut, 220km from here.
He said he was shocked to see a video purportedly showing up to 56 logging lorries leaving Sapulut for Kalabakan in the Tawau Division.
The one-minute video was posted in WhatsApp groups and Facebook.
The Keningau MP said the video may have exposed the possibility of “massive corruption”.
“Chief Minister Shafie Apdal needs to explain this,” he said in a statement here today.
“The video is a hot topic among concerned Sabahans who are openly questioning the integrity of the Warisan-led government.”
The Tambunan assemblyman said there are those who defended this activity, saying the timber licences were approved by the previous Barisan Nasional government.
“But if the Warisan government’s new policy is to weed out commercial logging, why didn’t it cancel these logging licences?” asked Jeffrey. - FMT
