PBS questions additional RM3.45 mil for state medals

Joniston Bangkuai.
KOTA KINABALU: Opposition assemblyman Joniston Bangkuai has questioned the rationale behind an additional allocation of RM3.45 million to the Sabah governor for the purchase of state award medals.
Joniston (PBS-Kiulu) said a sum of RM1.5 million had already been approved for that purpose this year.
“Does this mean that more deserving persons would be awarded with state honours?” he said when debating the supplementary supply bill at the Sabah state assembly today.
He said more deserving grassroots community leaders such as native and village chiefs should be considered for the awards in recognition of their services.
A total of 1,158 state honours were awarded in conjunction with the governor’s 65th birthday last year, of which 65 were the Panglima Gemilang Darjah Kinabalu (PGDK) carrying the title “Datuk”.
Critics say recipients do not really deserve the Datukships.
The state assembly today passed a supplementary budget for RM338 million as proposed by Chief Minister Shafie Apdal.
Shafie, who is also the state finance minister, said the supplementary budget was in addition to the RM3.9 billion budget tabled last year.

In his speech, Shafie said the additional funds were needed to smoothen the administrative operations for the final quarter of 2019. - FMT
