KUALA LUMPUR: Making sacrifices is important for Malaysians to foster better understanding among each other, says Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
"We must be willing to make sacrifices as it is through sacrifices that we are able to understand each other better.
"This is our hope and the reason why we learn about sacrifices and its importance among Muslims, " he told reporters after attending the Hari Raya Aidiladha (Hari Raya Haji) prayers at the National Mosque on Sunday (Aug 11).
Dr Mahathir said making sacrifices should not only be confined to the slaughtering of livestock to mark the celebration.
"I wish to remind all parties that today (Aug 11) is a day of sacrifice.
"We must learn to make sacrifices, not merely with the slaughtering of animals, but also in our behaviour and efforts," he said.
Earlier, Dr Mahathir Mohamad joined thousands of faithfuls in performing the Aidiladha prayers led by Masjid Negara’s grand imam Tan Sri Syeikh Ismail Muhammad.
Dr Mahathir, who was accompanied by his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, arrived at the mosque at about 8.17am.
In his sermon, Syeikh Ismail appealed to Muslims to reflect on the significance of making sacrifices and advised Muslims here to celebrate the occasion within their means.
He also urged Muslims here to appreciate their blessings in light of the sufferings of other Muslims in war-torn regions around the world. - Star
