Police: Rally against Zakir Naik unnecessary as he's under investigation

KUALA LUMPUR: The police say they are thankful the rally to protest against controversial preacher Dr Zakir Naik has been cancelled, saying a rally is unnecessary at this point as Zakir is under investigation.
"When there is no reason to do so, those who hold rallies are purposely creating unrest in the country, ” said KL city police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim when met at the Little India Water Fountain on Saturday (Aug 24).
He thanked people for not attending the planned rally.
"Their cooperation is greatly appreciated.

"This is the spirit that we want, where people follow police instructions which were to not hold the rally as I had previously stated," he said.

There was heavy police presence in Little India today, with uniformed police personnel conducting patrols around the area.
Roads to the area were originally closed, but have since been reopened.
The “Say No To Zakir Naik, Equal Rights To Indians & Other Races" was originally scheduled to commence at 2pm on Saturday, but the organisers cancelled it on Friday (Aug 23) night.
It is believed they did so following talks with PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
On Friday, two people were arrested at a rally held in the same area to protest khat calligraphy in Tamil schools.
Both were granted bail on Saturday.- Star
