PTPTN ensuring loan repayments are not burdensome

Education Minister Maszlee Malik.
PUTRAJAYA: Education Minister Maszlee Malik said today the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) will work with the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and Inland Revenue Board (IRB) to ensure loan repayments are not too burdensome for borrowers.
Maszlee also told reporters he had suggested that PTPTN divide borrowers into different categories to ensure fair treatment for all borrowers, particularly fresh graduates.
“We can’t group them into one category. Some borrowers have started paying back, some just graduated and some have refused to pay.
“So our target has to be those who refuse to pay — I mean those who graduated 20 years ago but are not paying. Don’t tell me they can’t repay the loans until now?
“So surely our actions will not be the same for those who have only graduated one or two years ago,” said Maszlee after handing over PTPTN advance financing warrants to students from Simpang Renggam at the ministry’s premises in Putrajaya.
He added that by categorising borrowers, the government would be able to fulfil its 14th general election manifesto promise to PTPTN borrowers, especially the fresh graduates.
In its manifesto, Pakatan Harapan had promised to allow PTPTN borrowers who earned a monthly income of RM4,000 and below to defer repaying their loans.
Maszlee said for loan repayments, PTPTN will work together with agencies such as EPF and the IRB to ensure that the repayment is not too burdensome.
Maszlee said proposals made following consultations with the public regarding student loans would be brought before the Cabinet soon. - FMT
