PETALING JAYA: Singapore scientists have announced that they had discovered a new antibody drug that could one day prove to be an alternative for chemotherapy in treating various types of cancer, CNA reported today.
The Singapore news site said the Agency for Science, Technology and Research’s Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB) had announced the findings of a study that had been published in scientific journal Nature Communications on June 6.
The scientists had generated PRL3-zumab, a humanised antibody, which can be used to attack cancer cells.
It said the antibody attacks the PRL-3 protein, a tumour antigen that promotes cancer growth which is found in 80% of 11 common cancers.
The scientiests say healthy cells are not affected.
CNA reported that Professor Qi Zeng, research director at IMCB and lead researcher, also said the antibody drug also has shown less side effects compared with other cancer drugs.
The scientists have been testing on animals and human tumour samples since 2012.
Clinical trials at the National University Cancer Institute will soon be undergoing Phase 2 to test for efficacy, CNA reported. - FMT
