KOTA KINABALU: The chairman of an NGO today laughed over claims by Warisan deputy president Darell Leiking placing blame on the previous state government for the decline in Sabah’s gross domestic product (GDP).
Speaking to reporters here today, Gerakan Kuasa Rakyat Malaysia chairman Zulkarnain Mahdar said Leiking, who is also the international trade and industry minister, should refrain from lying to the people that the Warisan-led Sabah government inherited a “broken” government from the Barisan Nasional.
Leiking has said the 6.7% decline in Sabah’s GDP in less than a year since Warisan took over was the doing of the BN government.
He said this in reply to Sabah Umno Youth chief Aziz Julkarnain’s statement claiming Chief Minister Shafie Apdal and the Warisan-led state government had ruined the Sabah economy.
In 2017, Sabah recorded the highest GDP growth in the country at 8.2% but last month, the Department of Statistics reported that Sabah’s GDP was only 1.5%, the lowest in Malaysia.
“Leiking’s statement was a blatant lie and a slander against the previous BN government. In 2016, the GDP growth was 4.7% while the state budget had been in the black for several years thanks to the shrewd management of former chief minister Musa Aman.
“The GDP growth was contributed by the agriculture and service sectors as well as other industries, namely mining, quarry and manufacturing,” he said.
Zulkarnain urged Leiking to stop playing the blame game and admit that the numbers had indeed plummeted ever since Warisan took over the state administration.
“It is shameful for a minister to say this and I hope Leiking will read more so that he will not issue such statements again in the future,” he said. - FMT
