A Tamil rights NGO in Penang has lodged a police report against controversial speaker Zakir Naik over a segment of his speech delivered in Kelantan on Aug 9 during his missionary tour of the east coast state.
Led by its president David Mashal, Malaysian Tamilar Kural urged the police to act against Zakir whose speech they said had offended the feelings of the Indian community in Malaysia.
They lodged the report at the Bukit Mertajam police headquarters in Bandar Perda, Seberang Perai.
David claimed Zakir had uttered seditious words that caused racial and religious discontent among the different communities in the country.
"Zakir has questioned the loyalties of the Indian community towards their country's leadership," he said.
"Zakir's speech at the forum in Kota Bahru, Kelantan's capital, has hurt the feelings of the Indians and can threaten the peace among the different races," added the Seberang Perai municipal councillor.
He said similar reports will be lodged nationwide,
Other than questioning Malaysian Indians' loyalty to their country, Zakir had also reportedly touched on the topic of China mistreating their Uyghur Muslim citizens.
Zakir had also said Indians in Malaysia had a population of 6.4 percent but he claimed they had more rights than all the Muslims in India, adding that Hindus in Malaysian were more loyal to Narendra Modi, the republic's prime minister.
Zakir had also raised the ire of a veterans group with his speech.
Saying they would like to see Zakir "shut up", National Patriots Association (Patriot) had chided the preacher, saying Malaysians of Indian origin were loyal.
Human Resources Minister M Kulasegaran has also called for action to be taken against the Muslim preacher.
Certain quarters in Malaysia are upset with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad who has consistently defended Zakir and refused to hand him over to India which wants him to return to face trial for money-laundering charges.
Zakir had denied the charges and Putrajaya said it will not deport him as they are concerned if he would be given a fair trial in his native land. - Mkini
