PETALING JAYA: Umno has filed three lawsuits to seek damages from its former leaders, Mustapa Mohamed, Hamzah Zainudin and Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz, for alleged breach of contract for leaving the party.
The suits were filed by Umno and Barisan Nasional office bearers Mohd Sumali Reduan and Abu Khamis at the Kota Bahru and Kuala Lumpur High Courts yesterday.
The former ruling coalition party wants the three current PPBM members to pay a total of RM600,000 in damages.
Mustapa left Umno on Sept 18, 2018 and later joined PPBM, a member of Pakatan Harapan, on Oct 26 the same year.
Hamzah and Ikmal joined PPBM on Feb 12. They left Umno on Dec 14, 2018.
Mustapa and Hamzah were also former Cabinet members under the previous BN government.
“Umno approved their membership applications and thus there exists a contractual relationship between the defendants (the three MPs) with us,” the party said.
Umno also said that they had given RM200,000 each to Mustapa, Hamzah and Ikmal to spend on the general election.
“Umno also allowed both of them to use the party’s machinery during the election campaign,” the party added.
Umno claimed that voters under the Jeli, Larut and Tanah Merah constituencies had lost confidence in the party.
“We have also lost the parliamentary seats,” the party added.
Umno is seeking general and aggravated damages from Mustapa, Hamzah and Ikmal as well as a court declaration that they had breached the contract with the party.
Former attorney-general Apandi Ali’s law firm will be representing Umno in the civil action.
The suits against Mustapa and Ikmal are fixed for mention on Aug 27 at the Kota Bharu High Court.
Hamzah’s lawsuit is fixed for mention on Aug 28 at the Kuala Lumpur High Court. - FMT
