Selangor legislative assembly speaker Ng Suee Lim (above) says he will turn down Jeram assemblyperson Mohd Shaid Rosli’s request to sit with the Opposition bench in the upcoming sitting.
Yesterday, Shaid said that his request was in protest of DAP Sungai Pelek assemblyperson Ronnie Liu’s recent criticism of Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
In response, Ng said the move was not viable as the Bersatu man remained a Pakatan Harapan lawmaker.
“I will reject the request because there is insufficient evidence.
“First of all, he (Shaid) has not been able to prove that he has defected from Bersatu and become an independent lawmaker. If he did that, then it would make sense.
“Secondly, (it would make sense) if he left Harapan. (But) he is still a part of Harapan,” he said when contacted by Malaysiakini.
Shaid (above) previously explained that his symbolic protest against Liu did not mean he was joining Umno. His request was welcomed by Selangor Opposition leader and Umno Sungai Air Tawar assemblyperson Rizam Ismail.
Don’t subject assembly to ‘propaganda’
Ng, who is the Sekinchan assemblyperson from DAP, further chastised Shaid for being “childish” for involving the state assembly in “political propaganda”.
“So you want to change seats and protest because of your dissatisfaction against the Sungai Pelek (assemblyperson). This is very childish and immature. This is not a valid reason.
“The state assembly speaker should not be dragged into any political disagreements or personal publicity stunts.
“This is because the state assembly is a credible place and should not be involved in political propaganda,” he remarked.
Ng thus urged Shaid not to tarnish the image of the august house.
Earlier this week, Liu had written a commentary entitled “Mahathir: the paper tiger” where he took the PM to task for welcoming former Umno leaders into Bersatu; refusing to set a date for the transition of the premiership to Anwar Ibrahim; and pursuing a racial agenda contrary to the values of the ruling coalition.
He also remarked that Harapan would be successful without Bersatu.
This led Shaid to challenge Liu for suggesting that the Harapan presidential council expel Bersatu from the coalition.
DAP has distanced itself from Liu’s comments and referred him to the party’s disciplinary committee.
Yesterday, former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak also tweeted a similar sentiment.
Uploading an image of Shaid's request letter to Ng on the change of seats, Najib tweeted that such a move brought back memories of his childhood days.
"This is similar to during our childhood when we requested with the teacher to allow us to change place as we are no longer friends with our member (friend)," he quipped.
