PETALING JAYA: Some 40 former workers of a rubber estate in Kedah decided to camp out in front of the menteri besar’s office in Alor Setar, Kedah to protest a week-long water supply cut at the estate.
A source told FMT that the authorities had cut water supply to their homes at the Padang Meha estate, which sits on land owned by Vintage Developers Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of MBF Holdings Berhad.
They said the move was to evict them, amid efforts to seek compensation allegedly promised to them by MBF Country Homes and Resorts Sdn Bhd in 1997, which bought the land in 1995.
Court documents sighted by FMT showed that 165 families residing there were offered to buy low-cost houses developed by MBF at a subsidised price of RM12,500 per unit.
“But to date, the promise of compensation has not been honoured. The houses have not been built,” the source told FMT.
FMT has contacted MBF for a response to the claim.
Meanwhile, the office of Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir has declined to comment pending a meeting with MBF next week. - FMT
