Five arrested over alleged LTTE links to challenge Sosma detention

KUALA LUMPUR: Lawyers will be filing habeas corpus applications on behalf of five men who were detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act over alleged links to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
Lawyer Ramkarpal Singh confirmed that they would be filing the applications at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex on Monday (Oct 21).
"We will hold a press conference outside the courthouse at around 12pm after filing the applications," he said when contacted.
Habeas corpus is a writ requiring a person under arrest to be brought before a judge or into court, especially to secure the person's release, unless lawful grounds are shown for their detention.

It is learnt that the applications would be made on behalf of M. Gunasekaran, G. Saminathan, S. Chandru, V. Suresh Kumar and S. Arivainthan.

Melaka exco member and Gadek assemblyman Gunasekaran and Seremban Jaya assemblyman Saminathan were arrested on Oct 10 by personnel from the Bukit Aman Counter Terrorism Division (E8), together with five other suspects following raids in Melaka, Negri Sembilan, Kedah, Perak, Kuala Lumpur, and Selangor.
Two days later, police arrested five more suspects following raids in Melaka, Penang and Selangor.
It is understood that in Melaka, a senior state official and a DAP member were picked up.- Star
