Gov't studying water reservoir systems to help address flash floods

The government will review the shortcomings of the Stormwater Management And Road Tunnel (Smart Tunnel) design in addressing frequent flash floods especially in the capital and the Klang Valley.
Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad said the study would help alleviate existing floods and reduce the capacity for rainwater to flow.
“Now we are going to do a study to see where the deficiencies in the existing (reservoir) designs are, (for) being able to handle most (flood problems).

"However, given that it is now (a spell of) heavy rain, then there may be changes. We have to increase in terms of capacity to carry rainwater and floodwater into rivers," he told reporters in Kuala Lumpur today.
Khalid said this when asked to comment on the government's plan to address the flash floods in the capital.
Several areas around the capital were hit by flash floods, including landslides and trees following heavy rain yesterday afternoon.
In a statement, the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department's Mobile Operations Centre said the areas affected by the flash floods were Kampung Segambut Indah, Kampung Sungai Penchala and the vicinity of Central Market, towards Brickfields.
It was also reported that there was a landslide at the Kemas Training Institute in Jalan Syed Putra following the collapse of a 10-metre-long retaining wall.
Trees were reported to have fallen at Jalan Segambut, Taman Sejahtera, Taman Sri Delima, Taman Sri Segambut, Taman Niaga Waris and at a Shell station in Taman Desa here. - Mkini
