Hisham for BN sec-gen? BN supreme council to discuss

BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (above) said the coalition is expected to discuss the proposal for former Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein to be made BN secretary-general in the next supreme council meeting.
He said to date, BN had not held any talks on the matter, but will do so “when the time comes”.
“We have not had a BN supreme council meeting. Insya-Allah (we will discuss this) when the time comes,” he said to reporters at the Parliament lobby today.
This is in response to the call by several quarters in Umno for Hishammuddin, who is also Sembrong MP, to replace Putrajaya MP Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor for the role.
It was alleged back in August that Zahid, along with MCA president Wee Ka Siong and MIC president SA Vigneswaran, agreed to appoint Hishammuddin (below) to the role.
Tengku Adnan, who is facing graft charges, has held the position since before the 2018 general election.
Umno's Padang Rengas MP Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz was appointed to the position after BN’s defeat in GE14.
However, fellow BN component parties MIC and MCA opposed the appointment, and so the position fell back to Tengku Adnan.
Among those who backed the call for Hishammuddin to be made BN secretary-general included Perlis Umno chief Shahidan Kassim, Selangor Umno chief Mat Nadzari Ahmad Dahlan and Johor Umno.
Meanwhile, on the issue of BN's Tanjung Piai parliamentary by-election candidate selection, the Umno chairperson said he would be meeting with BN party presidents soon.
He added the candidate would be announced soon on an agreed-upon date.
Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa recently said BN hoped to announce the candidate a week before Nomination Day, on either Oct 26 or 27.
Nomination day is set for November 2 while polls are slated for Nov 16.
The marginal Tanjung Piai seat was traditionally contested by MCA until Bersatu’s Dr Md Farid Md Rafik defeated MCA's two-term incumbent Wee Jeck Seng with a slim majority of 524 votes in GE14 with 20,731 and 21,255 votes respectively. PAS’ Nordin Othman only obtained 2,962 votes.
The parliamentary seat fell vacant after the death of Farid, 42, on Sept 21.
The constituency has approximately 54,000 voters, with 57 percent Malay compared with 42 percent Chinese and one percent Indians.
