IGP: Be brave to admit corruption, power abuse exist in police force

Corruption, abuse of power and drugs - these are among the faults plaguing the police that top cop Abdul Hamid Bador wants his officers to be brave enough to admit.
Speaking at a ceremony for officers graduating with diplomas and degrees from the police academy in Kuala Lumpur, Hamid said they must step up their professionalism and integrity when they get back to work.
"We must be brave to admit the fact that police have long been plagued with internal problems, corruption, abuse of power, drug addiction and many other wrongs which have been committed by not just a few, but many among us.
"And I have said this several times at forums before, if we are still arrogant, selfish and unwilling to admit our mistakes, we will not get anywhere," he added.
The police are cracking down on drug abusers among their ranks, with more than 100 officers testing positive for illicit substances in August.
There have been a number of cases this year of police being arrested or charged for graft.
Hamid said corruption brings down civilisations, and as such must be avoided.
The inspector-general of police said that facing the truth will allow police to look forward and improve themselves.
Otherwise, he said, all the huff and puff about making Malaysian police a world-class outfit would just be "empty talk".
"All this while, we have strived to pull the wool over the public's eyes by chanting slogans that police is a force that many countries are grateful to because together with the armed forces, we have successfully defeated armed Malayan Communist Party insurgents, and we trumpet this success everywhere.
"And what is most depressing is when this history of success is used to pressure the government into giving better treatment than we deserve.
"This is not good," Hamid said. - Mkini
