Maya’s tweet sparks debate

Actress Maya Karin said that she has no desire yet to star in a television drama.

A TWEET from actress Maya Karin about the state of English proficiency in Malaysia led to quite a debate among her followers, Harian Metro reported.

It all started when she shared about her encounter with a girl in Terengganu where she gave a talk on Oct 3.

“I asked a little girl at my library talk in Terengganu. ‘How old are you?’ *silence

‘How old are you?’ *silence again.

So I changed it to ‘adik umur berapa tahun?’ She immediately replied: 10.

“Think about it,” Maya tweeted.

Although a number of netizens backed Maya, saying she had raised a valid issue, others accused her of ridiculing youngsters who could not speak English well.

Maya, however, explained later that she was not questioning anyone’s intelligence.

“I wasn’t focusing on Terengganu folk. My focus was on the quality of education and the confidence of our young students.

“It was not my intention to insult anyone,” she said.
