KUALA LUMPUR: The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) is bracing itself for floods in Kelantan, Terengganu and the northern part of the peninsula next month.
A statement by the federal agency said Pahang and east Johor were also forecast to experience floods in December, while Johor, Pahang and west Sarawak in January and February next year.
Nadma said the Meterological Department has forecast the North East Monsoon to occur at the end of this month and will last until March next year, with the levels of floods almost on par with those of 2016 and 2017.
Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has directed all district, state and federal authorities to ensure adequate human resources, assets, temporary relief centres, depots, front bases and support supplies.
Nadma meanwhile said it was freezing leave of officers and personnel involved in disaster management from November 2019 until February 2020.
The move will affect disaster management agencies, district and state offices personnel, police, army, Fire And Rescue Department and Civil Defence Force.
Overall, 80,672 officers and personnel are prepared for the floods.
They would be assisted by 6,490 assets and machinery such as boats, lorries and ambulances, and 28,552 cubicle tents for the use of relief centres.
“For the monsoon season this time, the government has allocated RM4 million from the National Disaster Relief Trust Fund (NDRTF) for disaster operations expenditure and RM100,000 would be distributed to every agency involved.
Meanwhile, the Social Welfare Department is arranging 5,482 flood relief centres to accommodate 1,626,368 victims.
A total 6,044 officers, counsellors (165), Psychological Support Team (942) and 11,559 welfare volunteers are also on stand-by. - FMT
