The expected power transition between Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has been rife with speculation for months.
Asked today if he would set a specific date for the handover to allay these concerns, Mahathir sidestepped the question and instead emphasised that there remained work to be done.
“We have to study the situation. If the work is half done or not done, susah lah (it is difficult),” he answered.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said there is nothing further to discuss concerning the transition.
"There is already a mutual agreement. So what more is there to discuss?" she told reporters at a separate function in Kuala Lumpur.
Mahathir has repeatedly stood by his promise to pass the reins to Anwar but has declined to commit to a timeframe for it.
Anwar, meanwhile, has thus far maintained his trust that the premier would honour his pledge.
There has been an increasing number of appeals for the prime minister to serve a full five-year term, a call backed by Economic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali, who is Anwar’s party rival.
PKR advisory council deputy chair Syed Husin Ali has said that a late transition would "kill Pakatan Harapan in the next general election.
However, Wan Azizah said that this was just his opinion.
