Teacher who stapled pupil’s ear transferred

KOTA KINABALU: A female teacher who punished an errant pupil by stapling his ear has been transferred out.

This followed a meeting between the parents of the Year Four pupil, school management and the state education department.

Department director Mistirine Radin said the meeting was set up following the incident at the school in Likas on Sept 27.

“It was decided that transferring the teacher to another school would be best for all, ” she said when contacted yesterday.

It was reported that the boy told his parents about the stapling when they saw injuries on his ear. He had apparently not completed his homework.

She said the teacher was given a warning, and an agreement was reached between the teacher and the parents of the boy.

Mistirine said she had advised all teachers to follow the SOP when disciplining pupils, adding that only headmasters and teachers with authority were permitted to use the cane.

“Even so, they are subject to the SOP on caning, ” she said.

Kota Kinabalu police chief Asst Comm Habibi Majinji said the boy’s parents had withdrawn their police report against the teacher.

“After discussions with the various parties involved, the parents decided to let the matter rest, ” he said.- Star
