More than 40 Umno leaders, recipients of MACC’s compound to return monies allegedly received from 1MDB, have vowed to challenge the anti-graft body’s directive.
Former Felda chairperson Shahrir Samad said the group is prepared to face any response action from the MACC, including potential court action.
“We do not accept this offer, so if they want to process this to charge (the group), go ahead and charge.
“We will fight, we will seek out rights,” he said during a press conference at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur, today.
Also present was Umno supreme council member Ahmad Maslan, one of the recipients of the compound notice.
Shahrir also alleged that new MACC chief commissioner Latheefa Koya lied when she announced that 80 individuals and entities have purportedly received RM500,000 and above of 1MDB funds.
“It is a lie that came from the MACC chief,” he said.
Instead, he claimed several parties on the list revealed by Latheefa, last week, had allegedly only received up to RM100,000 or RM200,000.
The former cabinet minister and former Johor Bahru MP said they objected to being compounded for RM2.5 million despite just receiving up to RM200,000.
“That isn’t right,” he said.
Collection action
Meanwhile, Ahmad today said the group of up to 42 Umno leaders will collectively lodge police reports against the anti-graft body.
The Pontian MP said the move is to protest the “cruelty” of the MACC under Latheefa.
Umno, he said, has appointed a lawyer to handle this matter being faced by several Umno leaders including Ahmad (above) himself and BN.
“We will lodge police reports collectively today and tomorrow to express our dissatisfaction towards the MACC notices.
‘The money allegedly received by the then party president (Najib) was political funds and political funds are allowed by law,” he claimed.
BN entities also listed by the MACC included - Puteri Umno, Perak and Penang Umno liaison bodies, 15 Umno divisions, Selangor and Kedah MCA liaison committees, Parti Rakyat Sarawak, Kedah Gerakan, Kedah Parti Progresif Penduduk Malaysia (PPP) and MIC.
Former BN chairperson and prime minister Najib Abdul Razak’s brother former CIMB group chairperson Nazir Razak was also named.
Latheefa said the commission is seeking RM27.5 million from the latter.
Ahmad has denied receiving the monies as previously investigated by both the police and MACC, while Nazir said he will cooperate with authorities as he has believed the money, transferred to his account by Najib, to be legitimate.
Latheefa had also denied the MACC intentionally left anyone out of the list, saying the list was not exhaustive and would be issued in stages as part of the 1MDB fund recovery process.
She said the list of 80 names merely comprised individuals and entities alleged to have received large sums of money, RM500,000 and above. - Mkini
