Waze opens up traffic data to govt agencies

Waze says its ‘Waze for Cities Data’ can assist agencies to improve people movement, repair of infrastructure, and improve town planning.
GEORGE TOWN: Satellite navigation app Waze today said it will open up their traffic data, garnered from millions of users, to government agencies such as local councils, offering valuable insight on traffic patterns.
It said the “Waze for Cities Data” can assist government agencies to improve people movement, repair of infrastructure, and improve town planning.
It said it had cooperated with Smart Selangor Delivery Unit, which used Waze’s reports to fix potholes in the state, since 2016.
Waze’s public sector partnerships head Dani Simons said the data would be fused into Google Cloud, which allows officials to easily organise, store and interpret transport data.
“We have been a pioneer in sharing data with cities and working with them to improve infrastructure and fight traffic.
“But, over the past five years, the landscape has changed. Cities have more data than ever, but they want better tools to analyse it and be able to put it to use to improve their streets,” he said in a statement.
Waze said those interested will be able to analyse up to 1 terabyte of data and store up to 10 gigabyte of data each month. - FMT
