ZAHID, FACING DOZENS OF CORRUPTION CHARGES, ALSO INVITED TO MAHATHIR’S MALAY CONGRESS – BUT NOT ANWAR: HOW CAN EVENT BE ANYTHING BUT WITH HIDDEN POLITICAL MOTIVES – MAHATHIR’S INTENTIONS SEEN AS DISHONORABLE & DEVIOUS

UMNO has decided to participate in the October 6th Kongres Maruah Melayu (Congress for Malay Dignity) by choosing its secretary-general Annuar Musa and a few other party leaders, on the ground that it could add more weighs to the event organised by IPTA and NGOs.

I salute the decision although some quarters in the party had questioned its participation which will see the attendance of Prime Minister Dr Mahathir and other Malay leaders in the ruling Pakatan Harapan. Some even argued that the Congress will have a negative bearing on the Penyatuan Ummah between UMNO and PAS.
It worries some leaders and members who see the Congress as another PH tactic to shake Penyatuan Ummah after PAS president Hadi Awang agreed to attend it.
UMNO president Zahid Hamidi told a media conference after chairing the Supreme Council meeting today that he only received the invitation from the Congress organiser yesterday, and the SC has agreed that the should be represented on the ground that it will augur well for the Malays.
After reading some responses on the social media the past few days, I came to a conclusion that the Congress has nothing to do with Penyatuan Ummah and does not intend to become a carbon copy of it. The Congress is organised with the intention of putting the Malay agenda back on track again, and for that Umno as the largest Malay party has many things to contribute.
I believe the Penyatuan Ummah acts as an opening to Malay unity and political comeback after UMNO lost Putrajaya in the 14th general election. The attendance of Dr M may be significant to the event as the Malay agenda still slips through his hands when he was the fourth PM and the 7th PM.
Much had been said about the standard of Malays and their achievement thus far. The surge of detest over the issue is rising fast to the extent that it is being labelled as racism by some quarters, especially the non-Malays. After losing the economy with the debunked New Economic Policy (NEP) and the lost of political power in 2018, the Malays are coming to their senses that the only thing that cause the predicament is the existent of too many Malay parties and association.
Efforts to group them up together has failed a few times due to political indifference, misunderstanding and pride. Only when their political weight saw the exit in 2018, things changed rapidly.
Maybe we can have the NGO and IPTA (Higher Learning Institutes) to commend. They took the issue to a high level than gained attention of the Malays. Of course some non-Malay parties, notably DAP is not satisfied and against the idea of Dr M attending it but they have nothing to worry because they already have everything.
It will be good for UMNO’s presence at the Congress. With Zahid himself having to attend party convention in Johor Bahru and Melaka on the 5th and 6th, Annuar can lead a high level UMNO delegation to the event.
Will it be political?
Hope not but it is something unavoidable. As Malay agenda is very, very politic, I believe some major issues including to be brought up by UMNO will dominate the assembly. Do remember that the new session of Parliament will commence on Oct 7th – a day later – the Congress is timely organised to maintain its heat.
For UMNO, it will be another hefty agenda which it had been championing since Independence.
