A few bad apples don’t mean whole Umno is corrupt, says Ismail Sabri

A few corrupt individuals in Umno does not mean that the whole party is corrupt, said caretaker prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

He said the corruption cases faced by several of their party leaders do not involve the party but the individuals themselves.

“It is the individuals who have cases against them and the action taken is also against those individuals.

“It does not mean that Umno is corrupt,” Ismail Sabri said.

He said this during his appearance in a special television broadcast titled “Bual Bicara Khas Bersama Perdana Menteri - Kestabilan dan Kemakmuran” tonight.

Those who are facing corruption cases are undergoing the legal process by themselves without involving the party, he added.

Though Umno’s opponents may try to paint the whole party as corrupt due to those few cases, Ismail Sabri said the actions of a few do not reflect all three million of Umno’s members.

“We have three million members. If three to four people were involved (in corruption), you cannot say all three million are corrupt too,” Ismail Sabri said.

As an example of how the actions of a few leaders do not implicate the whole party, he recalled when several Umno leaders were arrested for links to communism, adding that Umno has never been a communist party.

He was likely referring to the incident in 1976, when three Umno leaders were detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for alleged involvement in communism.

Ismail Sabri also stressed that his government has always stuck to their stand of non-interference with the judiciary or investigating authorities such as the MACC or police.

“They (the agencies) are free to investigate anyone. No interference from the government, and when they (the leaders) are brought to face the court, they cannot drag the party into their issues,” he said.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is currently facing corruption charges in court while his predecessor, Najib Abdul Razak was sentenced in September to 12 years in jail over a corruption case involving RM42 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd. - Mkini
