Cabinet posts not a reward for supporting unity govt, says Anwar

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reiterated his desire to downsize the Cabinet.

PUTRAJAYA: Cabinet appointments are not a reward for supporting the unity government, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

He said this was also in line with his desire to reduce the size of the Cabinet.

“I want ministers who will support me based on my policies and are also committed to good governance, anti-corruption, and economic recovery,” he said at a press conference here.

Anwar said he wished to put a stop to the culture of rewarding MPs with ministerial positions in exchange for their support, adding that special envoys will only be considered when absolutely necessary.

The Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman had previously pledged to downsize the Cabinet, saying he would also propose to lower the salaries of ministers.

Following his appointment as prime minister on Nov 24, Anwar reiterated his election promise that he would forgo his salary.

The previous Cabinet under Ismail Sabri Yaakob had 31 ministers and 38 deputy ministers.

Anwar leads a unity government comprising PH, Barisan Nasional (BN), Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), with support from MPs from Muda, Warisan, Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) and independents. - FMT
