Don’t make too many political appointments, IDEAS tells Anwar

IDEAS CEO Tricia Yeoh said one of the government’s immediate priorities should be to build political stability.

PETALING JAYA: The Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) has advised newly minted Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to refrain from excessive political appointments to government-linked companies or federal statutory bodies (FSBs).

In a statement, the think tank’s CEO Tricia Yeoh said such appointments should not be done to reward political support for the unity government the Pakatan Harapan chairman is set to lead.

“Given the many coalitions involved, IDEAS proposes that this government creates a much leaner Cabinet and performs strict and regular due diligence upon its ministerial portfolios,” she added.

Yeoh said one of the government’s immediate priorities should be to build political stability and ensure all coalition members supported the government’s bid to serve its full five-year term.

“The political instability of the past two-and-a-half years must be quickly reversed if we are to plan for rapid economic recovery,” she said.

Yeoh also said several economic priorities – such as managing inflation rates, strengthening the ringgit, improving social safety nets, providing targeted assistance to lower-income groups and managing public debt – must be addressed immediately.

“On this note, the new government must table Budget 2023 before the end of this year as an immediate action to ensure expenditure is provided for the following fiscal year,” she said.

As institutional reforms were featured prominently in PH’s manifesto, Yeoh said IDEAS was hopeful that the government’s priorities on this front would include the Political Financing Act, Constituency Development Funds Act and others.

Anwar was sworn in as Malaysia’s 10th prime minister today.
