PETALING JAYA: In his first tweet as Malaysia’s prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim has pledged to do his best.

The Pakatan Harapan chairman acknowledged that he had a big task to take on as prime minister, but said he would bear this responsibility with his team and according to the people’s wishes.

“I will take on this duty entrusted to me with humility and responsibility,” said Anwar.

The PKR president was sworn in as prime minister before the King at 5.06pm. He leads a unity government that will comprise various coalitions.

Meanwhile, in reply, several netizens expressed well-wishes for Anwar.

Twitter user @SShobeni said she had been patiently waiting for this moment, adding that Malaysians held high hopes for Anwar.

@ArifFikriShafieFinally hoped that Anwar and the unity government would be able to develop the country and make it an “Asian Tiger” once again.

Anwar was formerly deputy prime minister to Dr Mahathir Mohamad between 1993 and 1998.

He served as finance minister from 1991 to 1998 where he advocated greater accountability, declined to offer government bailouts and instituted widespread spending cuts, which saved the Malaysian economy.

Anwar also served as the culture, youth and sports minister in 1983; agriculture minister in 1984 and education minister in 1986. - FMT
