PETALING JAYA: Pejuang’s Rafique Rashid Ali says his 20-year experience in the legal profession sets him apart from the other candidates contesting in Shah Alam.
Rafique said although his three rivals had been involved in politics, he was free of the “baggage” that came with their background.
He stressed that he was committed to serve the people rather than political masters.
“I’m entering politics to directly help the people around me, not to join a particular party or vie for a position,” he said when asked what prompted him to contest in Saturday’s 15th general election (GE15) as a first-time candidate.
“My experience as a lawyer has taught me to be a good listener, a voice for the people and a problem-solver.”
Rafique said people needed to set aside their fears over the perception that Pejuang, due to its role in Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA), is a “mass Malay movement”.
He pointed out that although GTA was grounded by four main Malay parties, the coalition also had highly qualified people and NGO members who were like-minded.
“When Pejuang drafted its constitution, it had the Federal Constitution in mind and this includes promoting the rights of all Malaysians, including Sarawakians, Sabahans and the indigenous people,” Rafique said.
From his interactions, especially with young voters, he found that the public had become more inquisitive.
“All four of us (candidates) are new faces for Shah Alam.
The battle for Shah Alam sees Rafique contesting against Dr Afif Bahardin (Perikatan Nasional), Isham Jalil (Barisan Nasional) and Azli Yusof (Pakatan Harapan). - FMT
