Man looking for family during Sabah water village fire found dead

 

KOTA KINABALU: A man who is believed to have been trying to locate his family during a fire in Kg Puyut Lahad Datu has been found dead on Monday (Nov 14).

The 66-year-old was said to have been going in and out of his home at a water village here as he wanted to make sure that everyone made it out safely.

However, when the fire subsided and rescuers were at the scene checking for victims, they were informed that a man remained missing.

“Our personnel were putting out the fire and when daylight broke, the victims told us that one person has not been found,” said Lahad Datu Fire Station chief Sumsoa Rashid, when contacted.

He said they started searching for the victim based on information of where he was last seen and found his charred remains below the destroyed house.

He said a total of 10 squatter homes and four vehicles were destroyed in the incident.

Earlier, Sumsoa said they received a distress call at around 4.34am and a team was dispatched to respond.

He said firemen managed to bring the fire under control at 5.41am and operations ceased at 8.50am.

“The charred remains of the victim were handed over to the police for further action,” he said.

No one else has been reported injured or missing thus far. - Star
