Newly elected Permatang Pauh MP Muhammad Fawwaz Mohamad Jan has refuted a claim that free petrol was offered in the constituency to celebrate his victory in the seat long held by Pakatan Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim and his family.
"There have been no instructions nor is it in my plan to give free petrol. We don't even know who will make up the federal government," he said in a Facebook post yesterday.
He also accused those aligned with defeated parties of making the claim.
"Slandering me is not the way to face defeat," he said.
The poster advertised free petrol giveaways at the Kubang Semah Shell station, Permatang Pauh Caltex, and Bandar Perda Petronas, at 6pm yesterday.
Muhammad Fawwaz's victory over Harapan incumbent Nurul Izzah Anwar was shocking, given that her parents held the seat in turn since 1982.
Nurul Izzah's mother, Dr Wan Azizah Ismail held the seat from 1999 to 2008 and from 2015 to 2018 when Anwar was in prison.
Nurul Izzah was contesting there for the second time.
She was a three-term MP, with the first two terms serving Lembah Pantai in Kuala Lumpur.
