Pejuang candidate Lando wants to ‘fight the system’

Ikatan Silaturrahim Brotherhood founder Azlan Zani Zawawi is contesting the Tanjong Karang parliamentary seat on a Pejuang ticket in GE15.

TANJONG KARANG: The Pejuang candidate for Tanjong Karang, Azlan Sani Zawawi says he entered politics to “fight the system”.

Azlan, who is better known as Lando, told FMT that he wanted to be an agent of change in Tanjong Karang, which he claims has not seen much development.

“I just want to fight the system. I’m not a politician and I don’t think like one, but I still want to help the people,” he told FMT on his candidacy in the general election (GE15).

The 47-year-old said he has been “fighting the system” in Tanjong Karang for 16 years in his own way, which includes going down to the ground and fixing the roads.

Azlan admitted, however, that it would be easier to “fix the system” if he was elected MP as he could then push for policy changes and legal reform.

“I’d like to see less red tape in order to fix the issues within the system. For example, it’s very difficult for people here to request for zakat aid and to seek welfare assistance. There has to be a reason for this,” he said.

The Ikatan Silaturrahim Brotherhood founder said he is contesting under Pejuang’s banner because the party agreed to let him do so without being a member.

The party also agreed to two other conditions he had set – firstly, to push for a death penalty for corruption offences involving more than RM100,000, and secondly, if he wins, he will establish a task force with the losing candidates to tackle issues in Tanjong Karang.

On his campaigning methods, Lando said he does not have a fixed schedule like other candidates who give talks and go on walkabouts in the constituency to garner support.

He said he has been working the ground since before the campaign period and has solved many issues faced by the electorate.

“We have been listening to representatives from mosques, silat groups, entrepreneurs, women, and pensioners to understand what they want and make it our manifesto,” he said.

He said some of the issues he has been working on are tackling high traffic flow as well as low voltage problems in rural areas.

This includes sitting down with representatives from the public works department (JKR) and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).

He said he also intends to encourage more investments in Tanjong Karang to provide more job opportunities to locals and develop tourism in the area.

The fight for Tanjong Karang will see Azlan take on Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi of Perikatan Nasional, Siti Rahayu Baharin of Muda, who is representing PH, Habibah Yusof (Barisan Nasional) and independent Rosni Mastol.

Selangor Umno chairman Noh Omar held the seat for six terms but was dropped by Barisan Nasional this time around. - FMT
