Police deny permission, Kuala Selangor candidates’ forum cancelled

The Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall’s (KLSCAH) forum that was supposed to take place yesterday in Kuala Selangor was cancelled after the police refused to grant permission.

The forum, mooted as an avenue for Kuala Selangor seat aspirants to present their political views, was scheduled to take place in 1Plaza, Kuala Selangor, at 8pm.

It was also supposed to be broadcast live on Facebook. The cancellation was announced by Kuala Selangor KLSCAH liaison committee chairperson Tan Cat Keong.

Taking to Facebook live, Tan apologised to the media and guests for the matter and explained what transpired.

“We invited four candidates vying for the Kuala Selangor seat to present to us their policy memos and what they want to bring to Kuala Selangor.

“But this can’t happen. This was meant to be a historical moment for Kuala Selangor,” he said.

Candidates not allowed in one place?

It ended with Tan’s brief speech and campaign videos of the four candidates.

When contacted, KLSCAH chief executive Ooi Heng told Malaysiakini that among the reasons given by the police to deny them permission to hold the event was that a debate was not allowed.

The police, Ooi added, also said that candidates and their supporters are not allowed to gather in one place to avoid social harmony from being disrupted.

Kuala Selangor will see a four-way fight involving the incumbent MP from Pakatan Harapan Dzulkefly Ahmad, outgoing finance minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz (BN), Mohd Noor Mohd Sahar (PAS) and Pejuang’s Jeram state assemblyperson Mohd Shaid Rosli. - Mkini
