AYER KUNING: A Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) candidate says the party feels it did the right thing in not working with Dr Mahathir Mohamad-led Pakatan Harapan in the 2018 general election (GE14).
KS Bawani, the sole PSM candidate in Perak, said the party had refused to work with PH as former prime minister Mahathir was part of the coalition.
She said this was because PSM did not trust Mahathir.
“The same Mahathir betrayed PH, just as we predicted,” she told FMT. “Now, people are saying what PSM said was correct.”
In this general election, the party sought to form an electoral pact with PH but the coalition turned it down.
“But we are still happy. Let the people be the judge, that’s the only thing we can say because we already made the effort (to form an electoral pact),” said Bawani, who is contesting for the Ayer Kuning state seat.
She regarded the rejection as a “good signal” to PSM, to be the progressive third force in Malaysia’s political arena.
As part of its agenda for the state, PSM is advocating amending Perak’s constitution to have an independent panel oversee the alienation of land being cultivated by farmers.
She acknowledged this could be difficult as it would require two-thirds majority support in the state assembly.
“I think even with one assemblyman, we (can) still voice out on this matter and bring the motion to the state assembly.
“Only people like us will bring (up this issue). And once we bring this to public notice, public pressure perhaps will make other assemblymen follow us,” she said.
Bawani is in a five-cornered fight against Ishsam Shahruddin (Barisan Nasional), Mohd Nazri Hashim (PH), Muhammad Farid Zainal (Perikatan Nasional) and Maziah Salim (Pejuang). - FMT
