Rain fails to deter early birds at polling centres

The weather was clear in Kuching, Sarawak, with a short queue already at SJK(C) Stampin before the polling station opened at 7.30am.

PETALING JAYA: A rainy morning ushered in polling day for the general election in the Klang Valley, but the damp weather failed to deter some voters from showing up early at their respective polling centres.

In Batu, a number of voters had already arrived at SMK Convent Sentul since 7am, despite the rain. Polling centres here only opened at 8am.

Among the early birds here was Tengku Ahmad Arif Iqmal, 23, who admitted to being nervous about casting his vote for the first time.

“I’m unsure about the process, but I read up as much as I could,” said Tengku Ahmad, who drove up from Melaka two days ago to cast his vote for the Batu seat.

Wheelchair-bound Lenny Gandhi was also among the first to arrive here to cast his ballot, expressing excitement to vote for the general election.

“I’m excited to be here. I know my vote will make a difference,” he said, as he was wheeled in by Election Commission officials ahead of the others to his voting booth.

It was still drizzling over in SK Taman Maluri, Titiwangsa, with EC officials clad in raincoats to assist voters.

Meanwhile, the weather was clear in Kuching, Sarawak, with a short queue already at SJK(C) Stampin before the polling station opened at 7.30am.

The line was gone as soon as the gates opened and people were directed to their respective voting channels.

Sandy Chieng, who is voting for the second time, said she woke at 6.30am just to be among the first to cast her ballot.

“I usually wake up at noon but I was so excited I was up early this time. Corruption in this country has to stop and I’m doing my part to stop this cycle. Please come out and vote,” Chieng urged fellow Malaysians. - FMT
