Shafie apologises for his comment offensive to the Chinese community

Warisan president Mohd Shafie Apdal has apologised for using a derogatory term against the Chinese community during his campaigning for the 15th general election (GE15).

"I am sorry, I was a bit emotional.

"I am sorry... I did not mean to insult (the Chinese community). I've been consistent in fighting for all races irrespective of whether they are Chinese, Indian, Iban, Murut, Kadazan, and other races," the New Straits Times quoted him telling the media during a campaign in Kemabong in Tenom, Sabah, today.

Shafie had, on several occasions during his campaign trail, lambasted Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), saying that "satu ekor Cina pun tiada jadi menteri" (there is not a single Chinese who became a minister in GRS), despite being a coalition of parties.

"Ekor" is a Malay word used for animals, and using them to refer to humans can be deemed offensive.

According to Shafie further, as a leader, he is duty-bound to serve the country and the people, and not to demonise and demoralise anyone.

"I apologise to everyone and as a human being and a leader of the country, I have no ill intention to hurt anyone's feelings," he added. - Mkini
